Cultural Differences- Extra Credit

As we learn more about the Middle East region and the cultures that inhabit it we may find many differences between our lives, beliefs, and traditions. As I've encouraged in class, go in with an open mind and try not to let bias get in the way. From time to time, however, you may feel opinionated about an event or custom we discuss.

Read the following article. It is about a young girl in Pakistan attempting to go to school and speak up for her right to an education. Some people did not agree with her and caused her harm.

An Attack in Pakistan

What is your reaction to the article? Write a 100 word editorial describing your opinion of the matter. Site specific information from the article including the girls name, the country this happened, and the situation that occurred. Your editorial will be worth 20 points added to your lowest test grade. The editorial is due no later than Friday, February 22nd.

*An editorial is an opinionated article, usually a response to an event.

European Extra Credit

Our extra credit this time around will come in the form of a little research on the European Union (EU). The EU is an organization comprised of several countries with a shared currency and relaxed trade. Research the EU and answer the following questions about it in COMPLETE SENTENCES.

1. What is the EU?
2. When was it created?
 3. Why was it created?
4. What countries are members?
5. What do they use for currency?
6. Is the EU successful or not?

Develop a bibliography of where you found your information at the bottom of your paper. The assignment will be worth two replacement daily grades if it is completed correctly.

Extra Credit- Due by 12/21/12

Mayan Calendar

Our current project is all about researching the Mayan calendar and finding out about this ancient civilization. While there is no written portion of this project, you may turn in one for extra credit. This report will replace up to three daily grades with a 100.

Simply write a one page paper telling me about the Maya. You'll need to make sure and answer all five of the questions from the imovie research project.

Papers are due by 12/21/2012, if we're still around. :)
